Program Notes: Conceiving Realities - live painting, flute, clarinet, tuba, voice percussion (vibraphone, prepared kick drum), electric guitar, pipa, viola, violoncello, analog electronics, and computer Conceiving Realities is the final work in a five-piece cycle titled Replenishment, inspired by the different stages of sleep. This piece corresponds to the REM sleep cycle and features ten instruments including all those used in the previous four pieces. The instrumentation consists of flute, clarinet, tuba, voice, percussion (vibraphone and a bass drum prepared with a tensioned string), electric guitar, Chinese pipa, viola, violoncello, analog electronics, and computer. The piece features a live painter with electroencephalogram (EEG) and electrocardiogram (EKG) sensors that send the data to the computer to process the sound of the ensemble. In this way, the sound affects the painter not only in the artistic decisions when creating the painting, but also on a physical level; influencing the biofeedback data affecting the parameters of the sound. This is done to connect the sonic and visual features of the piece in a feedback loop. The painting is created on plexiglass for better audience visibility, while also being captured by live video, which is then processed by the sound of the ensemble and projected onto three screens. The music features a combination of standard notation, graphic notation, and momentary improvisations. ![]() back
