Program Notes: Somnolence - viola, violoncello, prepared kick drum and computer Somnolence is the second movement in a cycle dedicated to human sleep. This movement is inspired by the first stage of non-REM sleep. In this stage, sometimes called the somnolent stage, the human brain is beginning to block outside stimuli and brain activity begins to slow down. This is also the stage when hypnic jerks may occur. These are moments of micro-awakenings in which muscles may twitch, accompanied by a sensation of falling. The notation for the acoustic instruments combines traditional and graphic notation. The computer part uses sounds from a sampled autoharp. The pitch material is transposed in real time based on probability chains using the Wendy Carlos scales for the intonation. ![]() back
